DC Maternity Photographer: If you fall, I will catch you, I’ll be waiting time after time

This maternity session in Georgetown, Washington DC was honestly one of my favorite sessions. A passion project.

I woke up to gray, rain, and cold. I texted this mama-to-be to let her know she had to bring a jacket or something… at 8+ months, let’s not get sick, okay? Ready with a clear umbrella, and one obnoxious stripy umbrella for myself, I walked out of the studio (Fostr Collaborative, where I’m a member), and walked two minutes down the street.

We met at dad, Johnny Spero’s brand new restaurant, Reverie, down a Georgetown alley. I can say it 3000 times and still … there is something so special about being invited into the lives of the people I photograph.

What I saw and felt here was support and partnership, and honesty. It’s hard to balance career, individual passions, and home as a couple, even more so as parents. Conscientious of each other the entire time, so much the perfect mix of laughter and serious sweetness during our photos in the restaurant as well as out in that alleyway in the rain (which I will remember always as one of my most favorite photo moments), parenthood already suits them.

I do have a soft spot for photos of mama. After having two kids, I sometimes still freeze at the thought that my babies were so close to my heart, literally, for so many months, and shared everything with me. The quiet moments before they actually enter the world are just a long, warm hug, that I look back on fondly, and also sadly (where has the time gone?). Just look at the moments I was able to share with mama.

Alexis told me about their love for “Time After Time” when we were in the studio after hanging out with Johnny.

Nobody asked me for advice, and I try not to give it unsolicited (because, I’ll admit, it makes me kind of salty when it happens in the other direction), but my hope for all new parents in a time of sleep deprivation and adjustment and growth, is that you remember this partnership, and you wait, ready to catch each other, support each other, every single time, even at 3am, 4am, 430am, 5am.

Can’t wait to photograph the new addition, so soon.
