DC Family Photographer: Quiet, sweet chatter with mom

This little dude was so excited to be on the go during our session at Fostr Collaborative and our quick walk around Georgetown. So just imagine how happy I was to have a few moments with just him and his mama. They raided the baby bag for books to read and discuss, in both English and Spanish.

Portraits like these are the ones that get me where I feel the most hate for time. Ooo what a turn for the negative, so sorry, folks, only truth here.

But really. Processing these later made me feel like I was grasping for these short stretches of time (like they’re slippery) that I have with my kids … the bits of in between closeness. And sometimes they’re out of necessity because of the chaos, where you suggest a break to read, a break just to cuddle. Let’s quiet down and just be. And in those moments, I try to notice the little toddler fingers, the puckered lips because someone is a grump, the messy hair. I am always so worried that tomorrow is the day they’ll grow up enough so that they don’t want to be as close, so they stretch out and begin to look like a “real kid,” when they turn away because they’re upset, instead of facing me head on with a baby face and a pout.

These portraits are so important. I take photos of my life because I’m so worried I’ll forget these details, and I can’t thank my clients enough for letting me help them remember.

Such true, poignant words! And really lovely images too. It’s so hard to find those moments and I think we all feel that anxiety of time moving so quickly, especially as we watch our children grow.
